Haircuts, Sweet Potatoes, and Quilts

This is Max's big boy haircut. I can't believe how much older he looks with short hair. He in one handsome little devil.

Max, or Stega-Maxus, as he is called when he wears his hat, doesn't love the snow.  I love that we have a little backyard where he can play.  It's really the little things in life that make me happy.

Joe just started eating baby food last week and he is not quite sure that he is into sweet potatoes.  So far, is looks more like me than Carl.  Unfortunately for Joe, this means that he won't have much hair until he is about 3 years old.  At least his is dark enough to see; my hair was so light that I just looked completely bald.

It seems I misplaced our Nativity set during the move so we purchased a new one this year.  We decided on Veggie Tales because Max loves the show.  I think it's pretty cute.  I particularly enjoy the Veggie Cow...it makes me smile.

And here is my Christmas quilt.  I couldn't get a better picture because of the poor lighting in our dining room but you can still tell what it looks like.  This is the second quilt I have made and I have found that I really enjoy quilting.  I find it therapeutic.  So much of what moms do everyday seems to vanish from view in minutes.  I find myself constantly picking up dishes or cleaning up the living room only to see new dishes and more toys on the floor when I come back into the room and so it seems that nothing ever really gets done in a day.  But when I make a quilt, the evidence of all my hard work is permanent and visible.  My quilts remind me that with hard work and a some sacrifices, anything is possible.

So stinking cold

In years past when it has been cold out, I will call my mom or Carl or anyone with a sympathetic ear and say: "It's like 5 degrees outside. I'm freezing!"  Well, never again will I use that phrase so glibly.  Yesterday it was actually 5 degrees outside and I really did think I was going to get frostbite.  5 degrees is a lot colder than I had ever imagined.  Next time the weatherman says that the high will be a balmy 5 degrees, I am staying inside and drinking hot coco instead of going to the (outdoor) mall to find Carl's final Christmas present.

Best purchase ever

I don't know if you are aware of this, but Omaha is stinking cold in the winter.  Yesterday I took Max to the Children's Museum and he started to cry when we walked outside because of the intense cold.  And yes, he was wearing a coat and hat.  Needless to say, I am freezing my tush off.

Last night we made a Target run because I needed new gloves (I lost one in our move).  While looking for gloves, I wandered into the shoe section and then I remembered that I needed a replacement pair of socks because the pair I was sporting had a gigantic hole in the big toe.  Since Max was about ready to fall asleep in the cart, I grabbed a few pairs and dashed to the register.  As I put a pair on this morning, I realized I bought knee socks.  I put them on anyway and ran out the door and...my leggies weren't cold.  I was thrilled!  I have now decided to buy a pair of knee socks for every day of the week plus a few extra in order to combat frostbite caused by the intense cold and frigid winds that are now a part of my daily life on the plains.
